Communications Design

The educational program of higher education in "Design"("Communications Design" specialization) is aimed at professional training in the sphere of digital design and information technologies. No other profession in design combines so much knowledge, experience and skills.

Communications Design is a multi-faceted field of study that demonstrates the true versatility and it is not limited only to drawing and decoration as we have got used to think. Communications Design today means engineering planning of processes in complex organizational structures. It combines such components as visual design, advertising, illustration, font culture, printing processes, information objects in the urban environment, animation, performance (theatrical performance), branding, copywriting (text writing), television and web design, and the Internet into a system.

The unit of communication is a message. The message is a dialogue, an interaction. It is not necessary that the message contains information as a factor influencing processes. The message solves a number of problems in addition to informative ones including drawing of attention, communication, influence on emotions, enhancing belief statements or even giving them up. It is also involved in the selection process. The message is not necessarily expressed in a verbal form because it can exist in the form of image or sensation. But more often, the purpose of visual communication is maintenance of a text message rather than independent influence.

Currently, Communications Design is focused on the graphic objects and electronic environment.

At the same time, Communications Design is extremely expansive in its scope because, firstly, it includes design of the method that is used for transmission of any multimedia data. It is the competence of a specialist in the field of Communications Design, as a director of the entire communication process that includes the development of the information transfer method. This means that the specialist should determine how and with what methods and technologies (television program, talk shows, movies, multimedia local application, web-site, portal, etc.), through which channels (the Internet and TV) it is best to convey the idea, goals and objectives of the customer or author of a multimedia work to the consumer or viewer. Secondly, the task of the media designer in a comprehensive discussion with the customer, project managers, and content specialists is to develop the structure of a project. It is in the process of developing the project structure that the most important tasks are solved, such as creation of the project scenario with its main components – exposition, climax and resolution, hypertext links within the multimedia document as well as user scenarios (this applies to any interactive projects, including the Internet or television) are thought out. Thirdly, a specialist in Communications Design projects the form of information presentation. Meanwhile, he or she has a huge number of tools and technologies in the arsenal that allow them to influence all the senses of a person so that the depth and power of impact on the consumer or viewer may be great. It is necessary for the specialist as one of the key figures in the team of creators of a multimedia work to link up the basic and systemic concepts such as function, structure (design), form and content, combining them with a figurative, harmonious component aimed at moral, humane goals that increase the aesthetic taste and culture of the user or viewer of a multimedia work. Social and moral responsibility of the specialist in the sphere of communication design is many times higher than it is in any other design sphere.

Communications Design is closely related to the concepts of marketing, management, psychology of communication. And a specialist dealing with it understands perfectly well that, of course, the product itself is important, but it is nothing without visual tools of communication with a potential client. A professional knows how to use all the techniques in order to attract a buyer to the store and encourage him to make a purchase.

The education program "Communications Design" is aimed at the progress of new tools and technologies, formation of professional skills, development of system and design thinking.

The task of training is to develop students ' professional thinking, ability to convey ideas, problems, knowledge, skills and information in bright expressive signs and images.
